RE: Company media policies

As media director for this company, I would like to take a moment of your time to make a few suggestions on how to best handle the press and other media. As the nature of your job may require that you interface with the media, please take this suggestion to heart.

Always treat anyone, including the media, with due respect but always be alert that nothing is ever off the record. When answering to an interview or making a public comment, state only the facts; do not guess or assume. Taken out of context, your assumption may appear in the paper the next day as a hard, cold fact. We all know from experience what a mess that can be.

Always remember that you are speaking as a representative of this company and will be quoted and referred to as such. Many times, your name and comments will be the only reference some segments of the public may have of our company. Do not ever assume that people know the facts or that the reporter will include all the information in the story. If what you are about to say can be misconstrued in a damaging way, ask for a moment to consider.

Remember, the media is a very powerful tool. Used in the proper fashion, increased positive public awareness is possible. Handled improperly, our entire company reputation will be irreparably damaged.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I will be more than happy to help.
